What to Expect at an Ayahuasca Ceremony in Iquitos

From preparation to integration — every step is guided by indigenous healers with decades of experience.

01
Preparation & Dieta
Days before your first ceremony, you follow the preparatory diet: no red meat, no alcohol, no recreational drugs. This cleans your body so the medicine works more effectively and safely.
02
The Ceremony
In our maloca surrounded by jungle, the curandero opens with prayers. Over 4-6 hours, the medicine works through visions, emotional release, and purging. The healer sings personalized ícaros that guide your experience.
03
Integration
The morning after, facilitators lead sharing circles and one-on-one check-ins. Plant baths with Amazonian herbs support cleansing. Rest days between ceremonies allow deep processing — where lasting transformation takes root.

Being at Pacaya Samiria is unlike any other retreat I've experienced. The jungle itself feels like part of the healing. The intimacy of only 8 guests allowed for genuine personal attention from the healers.

Ayahuasca Retreat Iquitos — FAQ

How do I get to Iquitos for an ayahuasca retreat?
Fly into Lima's Jorge Chávez International Airport, then take a 2-hour domestic flight to Iquitos (daily flights on LATAM and Star Perú). We pick you up at Iquitos airport and handle all transport to the retreat center, Pacaya Samiria Reserve. No visa required for most Western countries — Peru grants up to 183 days on arrival.
How many ayahuasca ceremonies are included?
It depends on your program: 3 ceremonies in the 5-day retreat, 5 in the 8-day, 8 in the 14-day, and 14+ in our 28-day master plant dieta. Every program also includes San Pedro ceremonies and optional kambo sessions. Rest days between ceremonies allow for deep integration.
Is it safe to do ayahuasca in Iquitos?
When done with experienced healers and proper medical screening, yes. We require a full medical questionnaire before acceptance and screen for all contraindicated medications (SSRIs, MAOIs, lithium, tramadol). Our Shipibo healers have decades of training, and two facilitators support every ceremony. Read our medical guidelines for details.
What's the difference between Iquitos vs. Cusco or Costa Rica?
Iquitos is the birthplace of the ayahuasca tradition. The plants grow wild in the surrounding jungle, the healers trained here under master curanderos, and the Amazon's energy is part of the ceremony. Retreats in other locations can be led by skilled people, but they lack the ecosystem — the jungle, the lineage, and the centuries of unbroken tradition that exist only here.
Do I need previous ayahuasca experience?
No. Most of our guests are first-timers. Our healers and facilitators provide thorough preparation, and the small group size (max 8) means you receive personal guidance throughout. Our 5-day retreat is specifically designed as an accessible entry point.
What should I pack for an ayahuasca retreat in Iquitos?
Light, breathable clothing (Iquitos is tropical at 28–33°C year-round), a rain jacket, insect repellent with DEET, a flashlight, comfortable ceremony clothes (white or light colors preferred), and a journal. We provide all bedding, towels, and purified water.
What are the retreat prices?
All-inclusive programs start from $1,520 USD (5-day Introduction) up to $4,860 USD (28-day Transformation). All prices include airport pickup from Iquitos, accommodation, three meals daily, all ceremonies, plant baths, integration sessions, and facilitator support. No hidden fees. Contact us for current availability.
How far in advance should I book?
We recommend at least 4–6 weeks ahead. Because we accept maximum 8 guests per retreat, our most popular dates (June–September dry season) fill quickly. A deposit secures your spot. Schedule a free discovery call to check available dates.
