Those that know me well used to call me the “Princess in the Pea”. If you don’t recall this
nursery story from childhood, I will surmise it for you quickly. The story goes that a Prince was
looking for his Princess. He was having difficulty finding her, until a young woman appeared on
his doorstep seeking shelter one evening. His mother placed a pea under 20 mattresses to
decipher if she was regal or not. To their delight the next morning, the young woman was
covered in bruises from the “hard” pea under the mattresses. To the Prince and his mother’s
delight, this indicated she was truly royal and had to be the Princess they were looking for.
Simply because a Princess has to have luxury and is sensitive to discomfort.
Well, no one ever put a pea under my mattresses, but in matters of comfort, I was extremely
sensitive in every way. I had so much discomfort being in the body all my life, any irritation
would be felt deeply in my body. This was a constant, daily struggle since developing several
autoimmune diseases from childhood. Sickness and pain followed me all my life and I was
miserably feeling it all the time.
When I began my medicine journey at Flower of Life Peru, I had to face my own inability to be
uncomfortable. I learned over time how to self soothe and not be bothered by insects, heat,
humidity, feelings in my body during ceremonies, negativity leaving my mind and emotions, fear
leaving my consciousness and spirit, facing trauma, grief and sadness to release these wounds,
and so much more.
Ayahuasca has a way of causing you to face the weaknesses you carry with you in your life.
This was one of them for me. Facing discomfort, transmuting the energy of emotional
attachment to the discomfort and allowing it to dissipate. I would say, after all this time, I’m
beginning to master this. It is a relief knowing I can be anywhere, anytime, in any circumstance
and find myself at peace with the living condition I am exposed to.
It’s not easy work, but necessary to find liberation which then allows for new experiences and
fulfillment to enter into your field of awareness. We all get set in our ways in so many areas of
our lives. From when we need to eat, to when we need to get to bed and how much sleep we
need, to being in comfortable surroundings, to not pushing the envelope on something new.
Comfort can breed complacency. It sure did for me, until Ayahuasca caused me to push my own
boundaries.
What flooded into my life was courage. Although, as a rock climber, single mother, athlete and
adventurer, I always thought I leaned into the side of courageousness. However, once I went
down the Medicine journey with Ayahuasca, the Amazon jungle and other plant medicines, I had
no idea the strength that existed within me. Until I did.
The outcome of this experience has opened my world up to trying new things, going to distant
places where most people wouldn’t travel to, putting myself in new situations that cause me to
grow, and what has appeared, is an unfoldment in my life that would otherwise not have
occurred.
Watching others go through this same process at Flower of Life is always a joy. For, I know what
is on the other side. I know the limitless possibilities that await those who walk through the fire. I
know the great adventure that awaits for those willing to be comfortable in the uncomfortable.
The peace. The courage. The adventure. The excitement. The world opening up. So many
wonderful things that occur during this lesson and teaching.
I don’t see many writing or talking about this aspect of the jungle medicine journey with
Ayahuasca. But, I think it is an oversight and one of the most important lessons and growth
journeys I, and others, have ever faced. It is one of the greatest liberators of all time!
Now, I don’t need a down pillow, air-conditioning, featherbed and 1000 count Egyptian cotton
sheets to put me into my slumber. A tent, a mat and a small pillow will suffice. Who knew??
Ayahuasca sure did.
You never know what awaits you when you master this part of your self. Life can be so much
fuller, richer and sweeter if the fear of facing discomfort is but a distant memory in your rear view
mirror. Doesn’t that just sound so grand?
